The Taj Mahal, a symbol of a ruler's eternal love for his wife, stands today as a representation of India in much the same way as the Statue of Liberty does for the United States of America, the pyramids for Egypt or the Eiffel Tower for Paris.
The monument is thought to embody the Muslim vision of `Paradise'. This is born out by the verses from the Koran inscribed liberally on its walls. There are, in fact, more calligraphic inscriptions here than at any other Mogul tomb. Almost all of the passages are from the Koran, which indicates its religious significance.
